Last year, a plant that looked like a star, very weak on the ground, appeared in my garden. Looked very cute. Everyone claimed, without claiming me what the plant was, "that's a weed, and prickly at that. Mow it, or slash it. You could't have that here." But I left it alone... A year later, my thistle looks like a tree! It is more than 6 feet tall, has branches, or "arms," that stretch out all around, and down to the ground, and it has many, many purple flowers, and they hold coming, on this mid-August! Nice and pretty gigantic butterflies, which I had never seen in my garden before, actually come everyday to drink their nectar. Thistle, a weed? I don't think so! One of the most pretty, ornamental plants I have ever seen! So, I will definitely plant more, so that in two years, at the end of the season, I'll have enough to slash some of the branches, peel them, and eat them just like celery. They cleanse your liver!

Kermit

All the thistles, invasive or not, produce really great flowers! Nice nectar plants too!

Will you send me a picture of lamsd quarter I live in Florida

Why would you remove the spines? They may prick your hands but have you not now tried putting them in your mouth? they don't prick your mouth or throat at all and have an awesome texture

Kenny H

Geen Dean? Nobody in their right mind is going to go to all the work to slash off the spines just to eat a handful of thistle, it's more problem than it's worth, and eat a spine and run the risk of internal infection, but chopped for use as a medicine in tea, yea, but this is just plain stupid. There's plenty of edible weeds that don't require all that bonus work and waste!

thanks again!!!

The stalk is edible after stripping it down.
