In Egham one unlucky lad’s boat is slowly sinking into the river Thames. Floating high above the actual only the night before when it was moored here, the only thing actually keeping this boat from sinking to the riverbed is the ropes that keep it to the dock. When the owner came back to continue his sails the day after, he had the rather unpleasant surprise of being greeted by the environmental agency. Thinking he was just going to be claimed off for parking it in the wrong zone he was horrified to see his aquatic home sinking deep bellow the water and on top of all this being claimed that recovering the boat would cost him a lofty sum by any standard.
The recovery squad included almost a dozen squad members, divers, a potent pump to obtain the water out, the dock keeper to lower the water lvl and finally a tiny crane to lift the boat out from under. As you can imagine such a gigantic gang is a hard and costly expense and after being filled with water the boat actually needs to be stripped out and have its engines replaces, a complete nightmare for the owner. But what caused it to happen in the first zone?
When he parked with the stern end or back part of the boat vs the actual, the pressure was hitting a low section which eventually broke and caused it to rapidly fill with water. Usually moor up with the head of your boat facing the stream, a costly lesson that I’m sure this sailor will never forget.
