This is a easy video explaining what the P R N D 2 1 settings mean, and why or why not to use them, including the most frequent question I see posted online - whether or not to O/D on or O/D off (overdrive on or off). The owner's manual and supplement that comes with these cars lists the very limited reasons to turn off O/D.Tags:
I turn my overdrive off when I'm in the way and then when I'm on the highway I turn my overdrive on
I have question about the overdrive, if the overdrive button is turning off. Does that mean the wire needs to be replaced or dose that mean the transmission needs to replaced? It's 05 p71 with 220k?
You mean the 4R75W?
My trans overdrive is burnt out so i have no choice but to drive oD off or it hit 25 nd slips out only up to 45 mph oD off till i obtain my newest trans in
The P71 looks so much like a government car , it's a classic I wish one before theres none left
Got really nervous when I turned O/D off and it wouldnt shift after it was doing 65-70mph @2,900rpm thought I lost 4th gear eased my mind thanks
No overdrive IS for towing
Some key things about the Ford 4 speed automatic transmissions; 45 mph is the most common speed where the overdrive lockup is designed to engage. Ford also has been adamant about owners NOT using overdrive for towing. When these transmissions first hit the supermarket in the early 80s (yes they have been around that long) Ford had a lot of troubles with the torque converter vanes getting shredded when owners towed on overdrive. The P71 uses either a 4R70 or 4R75 (the later more massive duty ver) from the factory. The another Panther platform cars (civilian CV, Grand Marquis and City Machine) used another versions of the 4 speed automatics, but were not the 4R70/75 versions. You can replace a P71 with those another versions without any large hassle, but they will be less durable and do deliever softer shift points. Leaving a Ford 4 speed auto in drive is needed if descending down a long hill or in twisty backroads because you will be able to use dynamic braking of the powertrain. In overdrive the machine will basically coast/freewheel. Using 2nd is useful in slick conditions when starting from a stop because the transmission will absorb more torque from the engine than if you had it in 1st or drive (which runs off in 1st).
Hell yes it stays in first/second gear. Ole school Receive up on 1rst gears redline.. Give her a lil wheel whip and The large ole beast will layout one of the widest cookies ive ever burnt into asphalt You really got to wish it tho.... cause she wants to keep on to the way in the worst idea
